The Story of Ricky (1991)

ricky2

Ricky (Siu-Wong Fan) is sent to a maximum security prison after he kills the people who murdered his girlfriend. The prison he is sent to is run by a ruthless assistant warden who also has a gang of four ruthless assassins working for him. As the gang of four terrorise and kill the inmates, Ricky decides to stand up and fight.

Ricky begins to challenge each of the gang and any other prisoners who stand in his way, cutting a bloody trail of carnage through the prison. Soon the prison warden comes to the prison to check what’s going on, determined to put an end to Ricky once and for all.

Based on a Manga of the same name, The Story of Ricky is deliriously violent. It is chock full of guts being ripped out, brains being splattered and skin being flailed.┬áThere is so much about this movie that is laughably bad, yet I still love it. Firstly the acting is really bad, almost Troma bad. Yet some of the effects are quite well done for a movie that is 23yrs old. However, some of the effects, like the death of Ricky’s girlfriend, are hilariously bad. There are some decent fight scenes, but not something I’d call out and out martial arts.

That being said, if you’re a fan of ultra violence, gore and splatter then it’s a pretty safe bet that you’ll like this film warts and all. Live action Manga rarely fares well, with the manic intensity of the animated version rarely matched in the live action version. I would say that it is well worth a watch. I think the fact that it plays it so straight doesn’t do it any favours. It would be much better if it was played a little more tongue in cheek. Like I said though, still worth a watch.

Braindead aka Dead Alive (1992)

brain5

Mothers boy Lionel Cosgrove (Timothy Balme) lives at home under the ever watchful eye of his overbearing mother Vera (Elizabeth Moody). Vera hounds Lionel every minute of the day, getting him to do chores and constantly putting him down. Lionel longs for a better life. He gets an idea of what that might be like when he meets Paquita (Diana Penalver) who works at the local store. Lionel and Paquita fall in love and begin to spend as much time as possible together.

Lionel and Paquita go to the zoo on a date. However not far behind is Vera, snooping and following the couple around a zoo. When Vera gets too close to one of the cages, a rat monkey reaches out and bites her arm. Later Vera begins to get very sick, with bits of her body falling off and her hunger seeking more than mere food. As Vera begins to bite and infect others, Lionely tries to keep a lid on the outbreak from his nosey neighbours and relatives. However when people come round for a party, things take a turn for the worse.

The house becomes a bloodbath, with zombies breaking out left and right. Lionel is faced with the unenviable task of disposing of the infestation and saving the life of his beloved Paquita. This movie is a gorehound heaven. One of Peter Jackson’s (yes that one) earlier films, this needs to be seen. It’s a horror comedy that surpasses even Evil Dead II for gore and splatter. I laugh when I think of the people that sought out Peter Jackson’s back catalogue after watching Lord of the Rings, only to find this.

BRAINDEAD

This movie is not for the squeamish it must be said. It is packed to the gills with gore and some truly inventive kills. The cast seem to be having a whale of a time. The script is also brilliant, with some absolute zingers. You really need to check this out, I cannot stress that enough. It is one of the best horror comedies out there, and for a film that’s 21yrs old that ain’t half bad.

Demons (1985)

demons3

I promised my good buddy Jamie that I’d do a review of Lamberto Bava’s ‘Demons’, so here it is. This is brilliantly trashy 80’s horror from Italian horror legend Lamberto Bava, son of the brilliant Mario Bava. A mysterious stranger appears in a metro station and begins to hand out flyers inviting people to attend a horror movie showing in a local cinema. The people arrive in their droves and begin to check the cinema out before the movie starts. One of the patrons called Tony (Bobby Rhodes) is attending with two females, one of who starts fooling around with a silver mask hanging on a statue. The mask cuts her face prompting her to put the mask back.

The film the people have arrived to watch begins. In it there is a group of students investigating some ruins, where it is rumoured that Nostradamus is buried. When they find the grave all that’s inside is a dusty old book and a mask wrapped in cloth. One of the students takes the cloth off and is presented with a sliver mask, similar to the one in the cinema foyer. One of the students begins fooling with the mask and it cuts his face. His friend tells him to stop as it is said in the book that anyone who puts the mask on will become possessed by a demon. The female accomplice of Tony who also wore the mask panics as it’s similar to what happened to her. She retreats to the bathroom where her cut pulsates and explodes with pus seeping from it. Her friend comes to the toilet to see what is wrong with her and is presented with a yellow eyed demon spewing green goo from her mouth. Pretty soon, one by one, the cinema goers are possessed by the demons. Now it’s up to a small group to battle the evil and try find a way out of the cinema.

This film is great fun. However it’s fun for some of the wrong reasons. The acting is not the best, and the dialogue is cringe worthy at times. That being said, Bobby Rhodes who plays Tony the Pimp is a joy to watch. He’s such a bad ass and just doesn’t give a fuck that you can’t help but love him. The rest of the cast are ok, not brilliant. The gore is top notch though. I don’t know what the budget was, but it seems decent enough as the effects are fantastic. Best of all though is the soundtrack. With great tunes by Billy Idol and Motley Crue to name but a few, it’s banging. If you haven’t seen it then give it a go. If you’re a horror fan then it’s a must.

demons2

I really enjoyed it, but found myself laughing a lot at some of the characters. Even the demons were funny, although not intentionally I don’t think. It’s not a particularly scary movie by any stretch, but is a good film to watch with some like minded pals. Enjoy!
